In year seven, textiles students learn the basics of textiles and design through the completion of two projects. The first project is the completion of their sewing licence, which includes the creation of a pincushion. During the pincushion task, students all follow the same design and instructions to learn basic sewing skills. The second project is their major assessment task, where they design and create a sustainable shopping. This project allows students to develop their knowledge of investigation and design whilst extending their skills in the safe and effective use of equipment.

In year eight, textiles students extend their knowledge and understanding of textiles and design through the completion of two projects. The first project is the creation of a decorated calico bag where students all follow the same instructions to learn basic sewing skills and design their own screen print and applique for each side of the bag. The second project is their major assessment task, where they produce a pair of PJs (t-shirt and shorts). This project allows students to extend their knowledge and skills in the safe and effective use of equipment whilst learning the basics of how to measure themselves, select appropriate patterns and follow the instruction and notions to create their PJs. Students then design their own decoration for their top, and order corresponding fabric for the shorts.

In year nine, students focus on Product Design. During this course, students further their skills in sewing and designing, and will create several pieces of work that have been designed with a client or target audience in mind. Students will need to meet with their client and determine the needs and wants of their client, whilst also working within particular constraints and considerations. They will complete a folio of their entire process, documenting their investigation, design, production and evaluation of their work. Towards the end of the school year, students will participate in the Year 9 Arts and Design Exhibition where their finished product and folio will be displayed for the local school and wider community.

The Design Cycle
The design cycle is used by all middle years students at Alamanda during their design classes. This includes textiles, visual communications, wood work and food. It is a helpful tool to help students work their way through the curriculum process of investigating and developing their design brief, planning their work, creating their product or solution and lastly, to provide a in depth critical analysis of the entire process.
