Fibres
A fibre is a thread or filament from which a vegetable tissue, mineral substance, or textile is formed. There are three major categories of textiles fibres: 1. Natural Fibres; 2. Synthetic Fibres; and 3. Regenerated Fibres.
There is plenty of information about sources of textiles fibres on the internet. Here is a list of some website that might help you with your investigations:
- Natural Fibres can be derived from plants, such as cotton, or animals, such as wool.
- Synthetic Fibres are manmade and are generally made through a chemical process. Examples include acrylic, polyester and nylon.
- Regenerated Fibres are natural, generally from wood pulp, but go through an extensive chemical process to be produced into a fibre. Regenerated fibres are often classified as synthetic or semi-synthetic.
