The major assessment task in year 8 is where students create a screen-printed T-shirt. This project allows students to extend their knowledge and skills in the safe and effective use of equipment whilst learning the basics of how to measure themselves, select appropriate patterns and follow the instruction and notions to create their t-shirt. Students then design their own screen-print for their t-shirt.

It is important for students to read the Problem Solving by Design and Design Brief pages on this website to effectively investigate and design their product. Students should also read about production and evaluation to help inform the successful completion of their project.

Investigation
  • Using the design brief above, you need to target areas that you need to investigate, identify what you already know, describe what you need to find out and identify how you will seek the information.
  • After you have done some research, record what you found out, or have learnt about the design issue.
Designing your product
  • Use the elements and principles of design to help you design your screen print. You can also use the internet to help you design your print.
  • It is necessary to identify the materials you will need to make the item and the purpose they will serve, and the tools that will be used and how to use them safely.
Planning and Management

Use the T-shirt instructions to help inform your production plan. Decide which techniques you will use to complete the product. Develop a production plan that contains a series of steps detailing:
  • techniques;
  • the order of production of the items;
  • estimation of the time needed for completing each task (e.g. one week allocated); and
  • draw plans of your bags with measurements, and create a pattern/template of the pieces to be cut out.

Production
  • Follow your production plan to produce your product. You may need to make modifications during the production of your t-shirt, and record explanations for the changes in your journal, demonstrating reflection, research and how you have responded to feedback on your design.
  • During all stages of your production, you should always follow the safety protocols of the equipment you are using and the class rules. If in doubt, please ask your teacher.
Evaluation & Reflection
  • Upon completion of your product, you are asked to test, analyse and evaluate your design and completed t-shirt, recommending any improvements that could be made to the function and appearance of your product.
  • Consider whether you would like to make any modifications to your T-shirt in relation to any improvements that you have identified.
