The major assessment task in year 7 is where students design and create their own bag for the iPad or laptop. This project allows students to develop their knowledge of investigation and design whilst extending their skills in the safe and effective use of equipment. The design brief for this project can be downloaded below.

You are required to write this up as part of your textiles folio, and submit it with your finished product for assessment.

The objectives of this project are to investigate, design, produce and evaluate a carry bag for either an iPad or laptop. Throughout this project, you will be required to:
  • investigate different styles and production methods of bags for your selected device;
  • design your bag, and develop a production plan;
  • implement your design and produce your bag; and
  • evaluate your product and production process.

It is important for students to read the Problem Solving by Design and Design Brief pages on this website to effectively investigate and design their product. Students should also read about production and evaluation to help inform the successful completion of their project.

Investigation
  • Using the design brief above, you need to target areas that you need to investigate, identify what you already know, describe what you need to find out and identify how you will seek the information.
  • After you have done some research, record what you found out, or have learnt about the design issue.
Designing your product
  • Your teacher will help you measure your device and design your bag with the help of online tutorials/patterns. Use the internet to help you design.
  • It is necessary to identify the materials you will need to make the item and the purpose they will serve, and the tools that will be used and how to use them safely.

Planning and Management
Decide which techniques you will use to complete the product. Develop a production plan that contains a series of steps detailing:
  • techniques;
  • the order of production of the items;
  • estimation of the time needed for completing each task (e.g. one week allocated); and
  • draw plans of your bags with measurements, and create a pattern/template of the pieces to be cut out.
Picture
Production
  • Follow your design (production plan) to produce your product. You may need to make modifications during the production of your bag, and record explanations for the changes in your journal, demonstrating reflection, research and how you have responded to feedback on your design.
  • During all stages of your production, you should always follow the safety protocols of the equipment you are using and the class rules. If in doubt, please ask your teacher.
Evaluation & Reflection
  • Upon completion of your product, you are asked to test, analyse and evaluate your design and completed bag, recommending any improvements that could be made to the function and appearance of your bag.
  • Consider whether you would like to make any modifications to your bag in relation to any improvements that you have identified.
